Colonel Francis Thornhagh of Fenton - A talk by Dr Stuart Jennings

National Civil War Centre - Tudor Hall. 18th June @ 11.00am

At the time of his death at the Battle of Preston (1648),Colonel Thornhagh was one of the rising figures in the parliamentarianranks.  Commander of all the parliamentarian cavalry in Nottinghamshire,based in Nottingham, he saw extensive military service both within the countyand across the country.  In his report to Parliament in 1648, OliverCromwell said of his dead colleague ‘he was a man as faithful and gallant inyour service as any’.

 

To coincide with the first ever full biography of this longoverlooked Nottinghamshire figure, this talk will examine the career of FrancisThornhagh.  It will explore the man, the soldier, the politician (MP forRetford 1646-48) and his evolving relationship with Oliver Cromwell over theyears 1643-1648 .

Two crime writers, William Shaw and David Mark, in conversation. Both have much loved series, but also other sides to their writing and engagement with readers. In lockdown William's daily social media events were a support to many; he was also integral to a volunteer-run community bookshop and workspace where established authors supported new writers. As well as his Aector McAvoy series, David's recent honest and open memoir about living with mental illness addresses an important issue in troubled times.
